Eileen Carroll KC (Hon), Full time Mediator

Eileen Carroll is one of the most senior and sought after mediators in practice today with over 20 years’ experience. She has worked with clients across a diverse range of sectors around the world. Her work has included highly complex multi-party disputes in international infrastructure, energy, insurance, commercial contracts, property, family business and trusts, financial services, intellectual property and media work across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, USA and Central America.

Principal Mediator and Co-Founder, CEDR

Eileen is the co-founder of CEDR and recognised as one of the pioneers of mediation in the U.K. In 2013 Eileen was awarded Queen’s Counsel Honoris Causa by the Ministry of Justice for her “outstanding career as a commercial mediator and her unique contribution in establishing mediation in civil justice systems over the last two decades”.

Eileen began her career in the international chemical industry before becoming a partner in the city law firm Turner Kenneth Brown (now CMS). For over 20 years Eileen worked with multinational corporations and a number of celebrity clients based in Europe, the Far East, India and the United States. She spent 10 years working with North American clients and worked in San Francisco with Thelen Reid Priest before returning to the U.K. to spearhead the creation of CEDR.

Clients on all sides have praised Eileen’s mediation work as “masterful”, “extraordinary”, “phenomenal”, “above and beyond” and “different and more valuable than other mediators”. Her style is noted as being "very hands on, active energetic, really focussed on outcomes for the clients”. Her clients describe her as "able to really understand the complex issues, distil them and at the same time she has a sense of humour and is lively and engaging".

The value of her casework in recent years has ranged from £200k up to £1billion and her clients have included business entrepreneurs, public sector organisations, celebrities, international corporations and sovereign states. She is on CPR New York’s Panel of Distinguished Neutrals and on the panels of the Singapore International Commercial Mediation Centre, the Vienna International Arbitration Centre and the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission.

In addition to her core mediation work, Eileen acts as a coach and independent chairperson in high-level difficult negotiations and business relationship challenges.

Appointment as Visiting Professor of Practice at Newcastle University Law School

At Newcastle University, Eileen will deliver guest lectures, provide advice and support with student mediation and advocacy training, become a patron of the student society and support the growing student activity of mediation in the Law School.

Head of School, Dr Jonathan Galloway said "I am delighted that we have been able to appoint Eileen Carroll KC as a Visiting Professor of Practice. This appointment is further evidence of our desire to establish a strong mediation and dispute resolution hub at Newcastle Law School under Professor Bryan Clark's leadership. It is exciting to be able to work with Professor Carrol given her breadth of experience and expertise, and I know our students will benefit enormously from this appointment."
